Samoa Aquatic Centre—Mon 25th May—Thurs 28th May 2011
SSFA had the privilege to train with surf life saving trainers Amelia Cole & Eldene O’shea from Surf Life Saving Australia.
The trainers are Australian Youth Ambassadors for Development (AYAD) which is a program funded by AUSAID. Amelia & Eldene will be working for the Samoa Tourism Authority for their assignments.
STA held a ceremony at the Samoa Aquatic Centre to introduce the SLS trainers.
The clinic which was run over a four day period at the Samoa Aquatic
Centre included water safety & rescue and basic first aid.
Other participants of this clinic were from various hotels and Papase’ea Sliding Rocks.
Rescues included pairing up and having one partner pretend to drown while the other practiced both aided and unaided rescues on a conscious and unconscious person.
All participants were then given a practical exam on the final day which included a 100m run –100m swim-100mrun, unaided and aided rescues, 2 minute float or treading water and first aid CPR.
Both trainers found the aquatic centre an excellent venue for training and are so far enjoying their time in Samoa.
